Sleeping in New Spaces

Even for those who have spent many nights in the woods or wilds, turning off the mind’s unease when it comes time to rest can be a challenge. With such a dramatic change in setting from home comforts, it is only natural that one may have trouble falling asleep. Thoughts of vulnerability can quickly escalate and spiral as evening winds snap branches in the darkness. I have spent many restless evenings, worrying about visits from beast, and fellow man, irritated that these moments were robbed from being quiet moments to enjoy. If you also suffer from such uncertainties, feel solace that you are not alone! Here are some methods I have found to help ease the mind into sleep.

Earplugs – Crucial for those sleeping in tents on windy nights, or when camping near highways. Though uncomfortable for a time, if you can experiment with different designs and brands you should find one that will help buffer the outside world.

Podcasts/Audio books – While also serving to buffer your inner world from outside distraction, they have the added benefit of providing a narrative for a worried mind to lean on. Corded earbuds should avoid being slept with, so pull them out as you feel sleep setting in. I usually put earbud in, allowing a open ear to be assured of no sudden outside noises.

Personal Protection – For those worried about sleeping in bear country, or wanting to be prepared any kind of night-time visitor, taking the edge of these concerns by having methods of self defense on hand can be very helpful. Bear pepper spray has been proven to be a very effective deterrent against any manner of animal. Review the instructions for use, and do not discharge in the tent.
A bright flashlight will also serve you well to illuminate any threat, while blinding its vision. These can also serve as a club.
Keeping a sharp knife nearby as a last line of defense can not only serve to ease your worries of not being ready for anything, but is also useful around the camp.
I, personally, do not carry fire arms, but, there are lots of resources online for those who choose to pursue this option.

Melatonin – This sleeping aide, or one of your choosing, can help take the edge off your nerves and facilitate a smooth slide into a nights rest. It goes without saying, but follow all printed instructions for use on packaging.

Finding your personal mantra to run through your head as you let the mind relax is a final step that can be the most helpful. Remember, thousands upon thousands of campers will pitch tents, or park RVs, across the world every year with nary an incident to be reported. The pitch black forest that just served as a idyllic backdrop to your day is still the same enchanting landscape, minus a few electromagnetic waves. The morning will bring new peace and further travels, so rest up!
